Esther's New Lover

Esther was a counselor at a camp for the last 10 days. The camp was for a bunch of young Egyptian orphans and also the kids whose parents work at the orphanage. Esther works with these kids all the time, loves them, and knows them pretty well.
So while at this camp, she is walking with one of the boys (who is around 10 or 11 years old). He tells her that he doesn't know how to be friends with her. She asks him why and he just says that he can't do it. Then there is long awkward silence. He suddenly bursts out that he is in love with her. There is more awkward silence. She asks if he means like he loves his friends or his family (hoping that something was lost in the translation). He simply says "no". Okay... more awkward silence.

Poor guy. Esther is such a heart breaker. She pretended they never had the conversation and tried her best to ignore him staring at her the rest of the week.

On a completely unrelated note, if I ever get that nesting urge and decide to start a family, I have decided to adopt a Korean kid. They are the cutest kids ever.

so she just totally ignored him and never even gave him a "no" or a "i'm not really interested" or anything?

i really don't like her.

Pat!!!! The guy is ten years old!! Did you miss that part? What do you expect her to seriously say to a ten year old. Hmmmm, let's try you've lost your damn mind or what part of "I'm more than twice your age" don't you understand. What are you supposed to say in that situation?

She was just trying to give him a gracious out by not humiliating him with direct rejection. She just wanted him to realize it was rediculous and then they both pretend it didn't happen.

I don't think she was wrong.

dear patrick
i'm sure you have a lot of experience with the egyptian culture, and i'm sure you have a lot of experience working with orphaned boys, which makes you the perfect judge of esther's character, but in this case she reacted perfectly to the situation

Dear Patrick,
This is Esther's mother. I am so proud of my daughter's heart. I am thrilled that she was entrusted with this little guy's crush. Please come visit some day and perhaps you'll have the chance to experience Esther's kindness. I can't promise she'll like you :)

Even though I can totally see why this guy would want to date Esther (she's the prettiest Esther I know), tell her I am not coming to any wedding unless the groom is at least 14. Craddle robber.

Sorry Pat! I could obviously tell that Katie was joking (she's Esther's cousin). I wasn't sure if you were serious or joking. As for the others, they are her mom, brother, and sister. They are morally obligated to defend her honor.
